What is deep brain stimulation and what is it used for?

DBS is recommended for patients with neurological or psychiatric conditions that do not respond to medication. In other words, people who continue to experience disabling symptoms despite receiving optimal pharmacological treatment. Common indications include:

  • Alzheimer

    OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER

  • DEPRESSION

  • CLUSTER HEADACHE

In all cases, the goal of DBS is to improve symptoms and enhance the patient's quality of life when medications are insufficient or cause significant side effects. Patient selection is key and is carried out through a comprehensive evaluation by our team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, and specialized nursing staff.

Benefits of Deep Brain Stimulation

DBS helps control both motor and non-motor symptoms continuously, 24 hours a day, with fewer fluctuations than medication alone. It is also an adjustable and reversible technique that can be adapted to the patient's evolution:

- Reduction of symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia
- Decrease in medication and related side effects
- Improvement in personal autonomy and quality of life
- Custom and dynamic adjustment of stimulation parameters

A safe and effective procedure

More than 80% of patients experience a significant improvement in symptoms, with medication reductions of up to 50-80%. Surgery is safe, with a major complication rate below 1%. If needed, the system can be deactivated or adjusted at any time.

Our experience in DBS

Our team has more than 30 years of experience performing DBS with proven outcomes. We have treated over 1,200 patients with Parkinson's disease, other movement disorders, refractory epilepsy, or neuropsychiatric conditions, achieving a major complication rate below 1% and no surgery-related mortality. Multidisciplinary collaboration, extensive expertise, and cutting-edge technology are key to our success. We offer intraoperative imaging, stereotactic navigation, and smart programming systems. The entire process - from patient selection to long-term follow-up - is performed in a personalized, safe, and coordinated manner.
